APPLE-1 OPERATION MANUAL

APPLESOFT REFERENCE MANUAL(BLUE BOOK)

Aoole II Reference ManualがRed Boookと呼ばれるのに対峙してBlue Bookと呼ばれる。 In contrast to the Apple II Reference Manual called “Red Book”, it is called “Blue Book”. The left is the original Bluebook. On the first page, Copyright 1977 Microsoft notation is written in small letters under the notation of Copyright 1977 Apple Computer, showing the fact that this manual was led by Microsoft led. The right one belongs to Applesoft II issued in August 1978. As you can see in the photograph, the original on the left uses a dim paper, and the right uses a glossy paper like the Redbook on the cover. APPLE II REFERENCE MANUAL(日本語版)

This manual is common known as “Red Book”. It consists of the following chapters.

This manual was written by Chris Espinoza at the time of UCLA's first grader, set as a type at a university machine, and submitted to Apple. In particular, in the section of FIRMWARE, ROM LISTING such as SYSTEM MONITOR MINI - ASSEMBLER etc. is released, and it is surprised by the open design thought of ​​Apple II at that time.

The right is a Japanese translated version of Red Book. Reference materials such as ROM LISTING are omitted. There is description on Tsukumo Electrical Co., Ltd. on the cover page and back cover. The date of publication etc. is unknown. B5 version.

1979年にはA4版のRed bookは、このA5版のリングバインダー型のマニュアルに引き継がれる。In 1979, the Red Book of the A4 version is handed over to the ring binder type manual of this A5 version. In the 6 chapters, the technical description of Apple II has been extensively described, and regarding hardware, most of all information is in this manual. At the end of the volume, the schematic diagram of the main logic board and Apple II' s disassemble illustration are also included. The picture on the left is Rev. C (1980 edition). Differences of the original Apple II, Euroapple, and Apple II Plus, motherboard differences, reference literature etc. are also mentioned. 1979 edition, 196 pages, A5 edition.

The Japanese version is on the right. On the back of the cover, there is a　note that Japanese version made by Inoue Art Co. Ltd. 1981-3, and in "Introduction", this reference manual is for the Japanese specification Apple II J-plus personal computer. Since Apple II J-plus was released in July 1980, it may be that there was another manual for the initial Apple II J-plus user. Although it is for IIJ-plus, the content is a faithful translation of "Apple II Reference Manual" including diagrams and page composition. On the other hand, there is only a simple annotation such as "special auto start ROM" regarding the difference between the output of the ROM and the annunciator output which caused the trouble of II J-plus. Regarding the differences of the motherboard, Rev. 0 and 1 are mentioned as well as Rev. 7.

Apple II J-plus, which began selling in Toray since July 1980, was deprived of parallel imports and clone machines and was struggling with around 100 units each month. This manual was bundled with Apple II J-plus together with "The Applesoft Tutorial" and "Applesoft II Basic reference Manual (Japanese version)".

BASIC PROGRAMMING MANUAL

Apple has two basic types, INTEGER BASIC of integer type and APPLESOFT BASIC of real number, this is the initial manual of INTEGER BASIC.

APPLESOFT BASIC PROGRAMMING REFERENCE MANUAL

Real number APPLESOFT BASIC programming manual. The difference between the two BASICs is described in appendices at the end of the book.

To use this BASIC with Original Apple II,

(1) Load from cassette
(2) Use the APPLESOFT II ROM card
(3) You need to do one of reading from DOS (3.2 or later) using the language card.

Apple IIPlus and later, it is read from the system ROM of 12 KB at boot time.

THE APPLESOFT TUTORIAL

Among the two BASICs, a description of real number BASIC that was announced later. From introduction to graphics, string variables are devised to learn about BASIC in general. At the end of the book, using APPLESOFT CARD, using a diskette, and reading from a cassette tape are explained in detail how to use memory. The cover illustration uses the same thing as APPLE II BASIC PROGRAMMING MANUAL which explained integer basic and it is confusing if you do not get used to it.

The right is the Japanese version of the above "The Applesoft Tutorial". On the back of the cover, there is a note that Japanese version made by Inoue Art Co., Ltd. 1981-3. Same as the Japanese version of the Apple II Reference Manual, it was attached to Aplle II J-plus.


Jef Laskin, also known as Macintosh development, was created as a person in charge of the manual, as well as "Basic Programming Manual" in this manual, which is used extensive use of color page, shows the direction of later Apple's manual. Also in this Japanese version manual, all the color photos, composition, headlines etc. are transplanted from the US version is very polite editing features.
