00/02/05 FAPPLE Year 2000, offline meeting at Shimokitazawa
FAPPLE (@ Nifty Apple 2 Forum) Our
year 2000 offline meeting was held at Twenty - One 21 in Tokyo’s Shimokitazawa
on January 29. It had been some years since FAPPLE had an offline meeting in
Tokyo, but more than 30 members, including inhabitants of Kyushu and Niigata
prefecture got together. From 2 pm until late at night, it was an “Off” meeting
full of enthusiasm and excitement.
In the first part of the meeting
(until 7 pm), the FAPPLE foundation members gave a talk, this followed by
stories told by old users, Ethernet and Internet connection using Apple II,
Apple IIGS, and demos of various Apple II emulators on Macintosh, etc. The
second part was in the form of a party. We watched an introduction video of the
Apple-1 and had a bingo tournament etc... I spent a pleasant day with old
friends and everyone who joined us for the first time - which extended beyond
our relationship on the net. I also made a brief speech for about 15 minutes on
the theme of "Apple is still fun." I would like to introduce an outline of it
below.

1. My
surprise at looking around a certain person's house. And what to do with
these old machines?
If I am
asked "What is fun?" I’ll say it doesn’t involve doing anything in
particular. Recently, when I have time, I am occupying myself simply
"organizing, classifying, examining or polishing my computers".
In 1993 I was transferred to
Kashiwazaki city in Niigata prefecture, and the following year in the
summer of 1994 a few members of FAPPLE came to visit our house. The coast
of Kashiwazaki kuziranami was one of the most famous beaches in Japan and
it was decided that in the autumn of 1995 that the offline meeting be held
here, because members liked this place. At that time, Mr. Izumi
(sckop) was living in the same Niigata prefecture, and it so
happens that he appeared in the Collector's Special edition (No. 95/8/15)
of the magazine "BRUTUS". I invited him to our Kashiwazaki offline
meeting. (

However,
the next day when we were looking at comp.sys.apple2.marketplace (a news
site for buying and selling things), Mr. Sckop said "They have one of
these. I want to get hold of one of these". He was talking about the Bell
& Howell AppleII Plus that was being sold.
Due to my
ever increasing collection of hardware, I regret to say that space in my
home is running out recently, and I have to stop buying as many as I did.
I would like to keep the machines around me constantly ready so that if I
turn on the power they work. However
to
keep my old machines in good condition all of the time requires proper
maintenance. For this reason, I have gradually come to understand the
importance of stocking spare parts. |

2. How to enjoy your hardware
Since there
were more than 6 million Apple II units produced, there are many models.
And following the development of the power supply, ROM, motherboard, and
keyboard, we can see that there is a multitude of
variation.
In this field, there are people with expertize whom I respect, and I also
want to continue researching and studying little by little. (

Although my original plan was to use
hardware that is as close to the original state as possible, I find great
pleasure in tracing the history of second-hand machines I come across,
when I look at the ROM, memory, and cards etc.
It is fun
to match not only the main body but also hardware, software, accessories
such as expansion cards, monitors and printers, because as they get older
it’s fun to see if it is still possible to connect them. |
