APPLE IIJ-PLUS

Apple II Plus announced in the autumn of 1979, the ROM area with 12K (2K, 6 pieces) is improved the configuration of the ROM called auto start ROM + Applesoft Basic (10K), compare to the previous Apple II standard configuration of monitor ROM + Integer (6K) BASIC.

On the other hand, this 12K area is designed to replace slot 0 entirely. Therefore, if you install an integer Basic card or Applesoft card in Slot 0, Standard and Plus machines will have nearly the same function. You can also load two kind of Basic from the disc drive by installing a language card (16 KRAM card) prepared in slot 0.
Apple IIJ - PLUS was announced in July 1980. This model is based on the Apple II Plus, a part of the auto start ROM modified, and can display Japanese character “katakana”. In addition, the keyboard is exclusive for J-Plus with a stamp of katakana. On the power supply and mother board, "TORAY" stamps are pushed in various places, which shows that elaborate recheck has been carried out after imported in Japan, but this careful quality control brought a list price of 358,000 yen. As a factor of the price difference of regular imports machines, apple IIJ plus did not succeed as a business. There are various versions of the Apple II, it is quite impressive to analyze the differences between boards, keyboards, and ROMs,
According to the COMPUTER FACTS Technical Service Data of Haward W.SAMS & Company, a version of the motherboard of Standard Apple II is, 0, 1,2,4,7, RFI, the version of the Apple II Plus is 7, RFI, these adding the difference in keyboard type, ROM version, manufacturing factory, Bell & Howell, Europlus, and the subspecies like this Apple II J-Plus, it becomes a great variety of Apple II standard and Apple II Plus family.

Toray COLOR MONITOR TM-113V (A)

A monitor with an Apple logo made by Toray Industries, Inc. Although it is made by NATIONAL, the monitor with no apple mark exists as the most different model number, the color of the front panel is different. Although I bought it at Ham Fair in Tokyo in a few years ago, unfortunately the panel cover of the front adjustment section is missing.

On the nameplate on the back side, there is a notation of model number TM - 113V (A), Toray Industries, Inc. 81, July - December. At that time, there was no monitor dedicated to Apple II, so Toray sold it for the Japanese market with Apple logo. If you check a page with several magazines or catalogs,

(1) "Toray" Apple catalog March, 81, 1988 (with no apple logo photo)

(2) Introduction to Apple Operation (May 1982) An example of color monitor (with apple logo photo)

(3) Two Steve & Apple (December 1983) ~ Since there is no special monitor especially for Apple II, you would like to choose one that has good compatibility. (Apple made, price unknown with photo )

(4) APPLE magazine 1984 No.2 color monitor (11 inches) NATIONAL 69,000 yen

Toray withdrawed from Apple business and it transferred to ESD laboratories in June 1982, although the Toray Research Center continues as a dealer (from "Under the Apple Tree"), but the reason why the withdrawing company kept selling monitors with apple logo is slightly unnatural, it may be that there are no logo models sold by ESD. If this inference is correct, this type of monitor will have existed during the period from the second half of 1981 to 1982. Regardless of the appearance of this monitor is poor, it is very good coloring performance when it turns out. The size of 11 inches color monitor is just right size for the Apple II series.

While considering such a thing, it is fun to think of the following history of one junk monitor.
